Dear Anne Lamott,

I wanted to try to send you a letter or an email, but seeing as how you do not have a website or an address I can find online, I’m just going to write you on my tumblr. Even if you don’t read it, I hope you can feel the good vibes I’m sending you.

I just finished (literally just an hour ago) your book Bird by Bird. It gives, gave and will continue to give me an overwhelming sense of hope, purpose, determination, peace…and a feeling of belonging, being understood. I’ve practically defaced your book with the amount of times I underlined or circled passages.

Writing has always been a dream I tucked away in the back pocket of my brain. I didn’t want to tell anyone that I wanted to be a writer; for heaven’s sakes, being an English major is bad enough. When I did start telling people, they’d laugh. Or they’d say, “Yeah! All you have to do is write another Harry Potter series and you’ll make bank!” But you sidled by and stuck your foot out for all those people to trip on. I saw you stick out your tongue, too. You patted me on the back and said—Do it. Not for fame, for publication, for money. For yourself. That’s the real magic of writing.

I found my purpose when I was little, stapling pages together to make a story, but your book helped make me feel like I can really do it.

Thank you so much.
